Is Fishing in the Tropics Perfection - Some things You Need to Know
Tropical Fresh Water Fishing
Ah, warm, tropical breezes, swaying palms, tepid waters for wading and spectacular sunsets nearly every evening. Bliss, heaven and Nirvana for fishermen or so youd think. The truth is that fresh water fishing in the tropics can be just as or even more dangerous than the salt water variety. How so? Read on.
Piranha and Family
Take, for example, one of the best-eating fish I know Piranha. Theyre relatively easy, even fun to catch, once you know how. Just dont get careless or youll find a finger gone before you know it. Oh right, you think Piranha are little things. Well yes, some species can be palm-sized, but then therere also the big boys half a meter or more long and tipping in at several pounds each. Now add in that regardless of size or species they run in schools of a few dozen to hundreds or thousands. No, thats not a typo. If you know how to fish for them you dont even need bait. Theyre attracted to distress sounds in the water, you see. Just dont be IN the water when they soon show up. Any kind of meat or flesh on your hook will then get them to grab hold. Dont worry too much about losing them. They really dont like to let go anyway.
Pirarcu and Giant Catfish
Then there are Piraracu, giant catfish and other man-sized fish lurking below the surface of hundreds of Amazon River and Orinoco River basin waters. Angler fish spit at you with amazing accuracy. Fresh water eels and other small fish species slither, wriggle and crawl into places Id rather not talk about. Add to their size and strength of some of the bigger species the fact that these waters are commonly full of sunken underbrush, fallen trees, limbs and braches along with a healthy current and undertows from the swirling fast-flowing waters and youve got the recipe for the makings of a serious mess if you make any mistake at all.
Word of Advice: If youre fishing unknown tropical waters, take a local native guide or else.
Then there are some of the native indigenous tribes themselves. Many of them dont want you fishing in lakes and rivers in their territory. Why? Its because youre tampering with their natural food supplies. Not only that but some of the tribes, like the Huarani of Northeastern Ecuador, are not particularly nice about telling you NO. The Huarani used to be notorious headhunters. Publicly they claim it isnt done anymore. But the Abya- Yala Cultural Center, a museum in Quito, Ecuador (http://www.abyayala.org/museo.htm) has a supply of REAL shrunken heads collected from the region. Thats all Im saying for now.
Some tribes in the Colombian Amazon wont exactly roll out the Welcome Wagon for you either.
Tropical fresh waters in Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela hold a surprising array of new and different species including sub-species or ones you might be more familiar with such as Catfish and Carp varieties. Tropical Catfish species in a number of beautifully-colored varieties are especially common in warmer tropical lakes, streams and rivers throughout most of South America. Fishing this sector of the world can be an exciting, rewarding experience in many ways. Just remember to exercise foresight and planning along with a generous dose of caution whenever you visit or fish ANY unfamiliar waters.
