Myspace Hacked
Recently on myspace.com an ad would show up for DeckOutYourDeck.com. However, this ad was no ordinary ad for deck lovers. This ad would actually infect your computer with malware. This particular malware was a trojan horse. It appeared on the site earlier this month (July 2006). The ad appeared on the sites webshots and facebook as well.
It is estimated that this ad infected over 1.07 million computers. The ad attacked a windows metafile vulnerability. Windows released a patch for the problem, so if users had the patch they were safe. Also users using firefox 1.5 or higher were also safe. Myspace has a full-time ad staff but they apparently failed to check the authenticity of the deck ad.
This just goes to show you are never really safe when browser the net. You never know what is out there waiting for unsuspecting internet users. There are several things you can do to help protect yourself. First get an antivirus and keep it up to date. The free Google Pack comes equipped with one that is free for the first 6 months. Also try using the Firefox web browser.
As stated earlier in the story this ad did not affect users of the Firefox browser. Links to both pieces of software can be found throughout my sites.
