The Disadvantages of Using VoIP

The Public Telephone Network working presently is rather a foolproof system and an effective one at that and has also earned the respect and trust of its millions of users. On the other hand, the system of the Internet and e-mail and all other such systems are still considered slightly flaky.

If the e-mail goes down for half an hour, it will hardly affect a lot of people but, if the phone line stops working for say 20 minutes, it will send everybody into a fit of panic and anxiety. Thus we see that if the PSTN lags behind somewhere in efficiency it scores much higher in terms of reliability.

We must also notice that the Internet system is a lot more detailed and complex and thus has more chances of their being errors and faults. This snowballs into forming the biggest flaw that VOIP had which is of reliability and trust.

The telephone that we use now works on something known as the Phantom Power which enables it to work even if there is no electricity. But the VOIP depends on the Wall Power and so, if the electricity goes at your place you can not even use the phone.

You can also add a lot of changes and gadgets like the video recorder, TV services and security systems to the existing telephone but there is no way to do the same with VOIP.

Since VOIP makes use of IP addressed phone numbers, it is difficult to make emergency phone calls and it is very difficult to locate the caller geographically. Unless the caller gives the address himself, it is quite impossible to reach on time to offer some help.

The VOIP works through the Internet and it is thus susceptible to all the problems that come along with the Internet. There may be distortions in the sound and errors in transmission. It is also prone to viruses and hacking.
