What is Affiliate Marketing?

I was recently asked by a co-worker to explain to him exactly what it is I do on the Internet. I found it difficult to explain to someone who has no knowledge of Internet Marketing what it is exactly. What is it that I do? For years I have been saying I am an Internet Marketer. I am confident in that I know what I do, but how to explain it. I guess the best place to start is at the beginning.

We have all seen the commercials on TV about the man or woman who earn $35000-$50000 a month online. Do we believe them, or brush it off as a scam. Surely the FCC would not allow that type of advertising if it weren't true? Fortunately for a great many people, they are not that gullible. I am sure that over a period of time and lots of hard work, you can achieve those goals, but do not think it will happen within a short period of time or by itself. I personally know someone who does make that and more online; however he has been at it for over 10 years, and I am positive it did not happen overnight.

If you are thinking of making money online, the best place for anyone to start is as an affiliate. What is an affiliate? Basically, an affiliate is the middleman. For instance, I am an affiliate for several legitimate survey companies. All of these survey companies need people to take their surveys. They could advertise on TV or Radio, or even the Internet, but the truth is it is more cost effective for them to hire someone to recruit people who are genuinely interested in making money online. That is where I come in; I recruit people through my website to purchase a spot on the survey of their choice, (prices range around $50 to join the survey), the survey company in turn pays me for recruiting the people. This is true of all the companies I represent.

Working at home is a great way to stay in touch with what your children are doing, while earning extra income. The one point that cannot be stressed enough is that it takes work. When I first started I devoted 40+ hrs a week developing my website, getting to know the best way to advertise and so forth. The one thing you cannot do is get discouraged because the big checks do not come flowing in within the first month. Like any business online or offline it takes time and hard work to build a reputation and clientele.

I have heard and seen it too many times where the person signs up under me or through another website, and thinks that it will happen by itself. It does not! When that person does not succeed whether through lack of training or support, they then deem whatever the endeavor was a "scam". This is what gives Internet Marketing a bad name.

So to move on...you now know what an affiliate marketer is and what we do. What about the person who has something to sell. How do you go about that? Lets say for convenience you have a unique product that you want to market online. Is Ebay the place to do it? For some yes. Ebay is a great resource to sell your products. If you have a large quantity to sell then I would advise setting up your own store on Ebay. There are many books and tutorials online that can show you how to do this.

But suppose you don't have a product. Are there products online that you can sell? Yes, again! There are several stores you can sign up for as an AFFILIATE that want you to sell their products. These companies usually handle all the merchandise, including payments, shipping, and returns. All you have to do is advertise their sites. These sites range from Telecommunications to Health products.

There is a lot of information on the web about any of the products I have mentioned. My best advice to anyone wanting to start an Internet Business is to make sure you are working for a legitimate company. Pay no money up front for an affiliate program. If all you want to do is earn money doing surveys, then use one of the paid services. The quality and quantity of the surveys offered are better. Of course, that is just my opinion.
